Night Dive Puts Spotlight on Hawai'i’s Gentle Giants

Diving with giant manta rays is one of the rarest and most sought-after of undersea encounters, but off Hawaii’s Big Island it is almost a nightly experience as scuba divers and mantas come together in a thrilling ballet. The divers are drawn by the mantas, which are enticed by millions of plankton, which are attracted to the divers’ lights after riding the upward surge of nutrient-rich seawater from thousands of feet below.

It’s part thrill-ride, part time machine -- a vintage aviation adventure that soars on the wings of a WWII era Stearman biplane trainer and takes passengers to the edge of history on a flight that retraces the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Since 1992, thousands of history buffs and would-be barnstormers have achieved the same lofty goal thanks to Bruce Clements and his Oahu-based company Stearman Bi-Plane Rides, LLC.

Playful, elusive and famously aqua-batic, dolphins are arguably the most endearing creatures in the sea.  Perhaps it’s the mammalian kinship we share or the smiles etched on their faces -- but for whatever reason, people are drawn to the slick, gray wave-dancers. Boat tour operators the world over have seized on the demand with dolphin-sighting cruises and plenty of marine parks stage elaborate shows; however, few places on earth actually permit direct dolphin contact.
