Busy building and remodeling firm does it all from architecture to design based on a solid foundatio

When successful custom home contractor Jim Byxbee came to Hawai‘i from Connecticut 13 years ago, he brought a trunkful of practical Yankee virtues and building disciplines with him. Byxbee likes to think that his

Honolulu-based company, Homeworks Construction, has helped raise the standards of residential building in the Aloha State.
Hundreds of Island residents and home experts must agree, because Homeworks has grown into a thriving firm of 65 employees including architects, interior designers, remodeling experts, construction professionals, and more. The company, which typically builds at least 20 new homes a year and remodels that many more, has covered its walls with awards from the Parade of Homes, the Building Industry Association, and many other respected groups.
"We're builders," Byxbee proudly declares of the versatile firm that he co-owns with Marshall Hickox and Sylvio Boucher. "We'll build anything that makes sense or is feasible. We don't want to lock ourselves into building on just one side of the island, one style, or one size. We do it all."

This pragmatic approach translates into a solid commitment to professionalism, based on the finest contractor's standards, combined with deep sensitivity to client desires, Hawaiian culture, and environmental issues. The Homeworks Construction staff walks step by step, holding clients' hands, through the complex process of home design, construction, or remodeling to ensure a result that is on time, on budget, looks beautiful, and holds up for years and years.
Byxbee himself is a relaxed, unpretentious, open-minded man whose affable personality translates well in his weekly call-in radio show. Every Saturday afternoon from 1-2 PM you'll find him on KHVH-AM830, fielding questions from current and potential homeowners about everything from cabinetry to contracts. He's been doing the show for four years and obviously gets a big kick out of it.
"We feel an obligation as one of Hawai‘i's most successful design firms to help educate people so they don't make a mistake when hiring a contractor or even undertaking a do-it-yourself job," he says. The firm also hosts free monthly homebuilding and improvement seminars around town, featuring a different in-depth topic each time.
"Our Homeworks philosophy has always been to incorporate today's technology, materials, and workmanship to produce homes for the most discriminating homeowner," says Byxbee. "Homeworks strives to create a product that is unique to our individual client's needs and taste…Our goal is always to produce a product and experience that is rewarding and enjoyable for all involved."
