Carla Flood's global perspective, passion, and professionalism graces upscale private homes, mega-resorts, and much more.

Some people have the gift of instant intimacy—or, at the very least, "rapid rapport." Carla Flood, ASID, is one of them.

A woman of charm, culture, and accomplishment, she is also a down-to-earth lady with an easy laugh. But her friendly, casual manner belongs to a true world citizen who has traveled the globe to learn about art and culture, and who—in her fifth decade of design—is a tiger when it comes to staying current with the latest trends in her field, as well as the latest technology from iPhones to Mac Leopard.

She provides interior design for some of Hawai‘i's finest resorts, everything from ballrooms to guest rooms, restaurants, and porte cochere.

Her degree in architecture, fine & decorative arts from UC Berkeley led to an ad agency job in San Francisco. A request to decorate a medical office building launched a career that includes an award for excellence from the Designers Showcase in tony Marin County, California.

Flood commuted from Marin to Maui for 15 years before moving fulltime to what is now Wailea in the mid-‘80s. Initially one of Maui's first interior designers, by now she's almost part of the landscape herself, having worked with Hawai‘i's foremost architect, the late Vladimir Ossipoff, on Maui's Wailea Elua project, and being honored as 2005 Humanitarian of the Year by Hawai‘i's ASID chapter for her deep and ongoing community involvements, plural.

Today, she accepts assignments on all the Islands, designing everything from auto showrooms to condominiums, resorts, restaurants, residences, and more. She loves people as much as creativity, and learns something new every day.

dining area"If you know design, scale, color, and value, and if you listen to whomever you are speaking with, you become very excited because each new assignment offers an opportunity to be a creative problem-solver," Flood says. "I'm fueled by a never-ending fascination with people and meeting their needs with innovation. Whatever is current today, there's always something new tomorrow, both in terms of taste and technology. I try to stay on top of all the trends, while encouraging my clients to stay true to timeless design principles."

Arguably, Carla Flood herself is timeless. Her work perfectly reflects the evolving spirit of a world culture -- and today's Hawai'i.
