People in love with each other are said to walk on air. People in love with their Hawaiian Rugs walk on art…literally.

The Indich Collection provides beautiful Hawaiian Rugs ®  that consist exclusively of 100% all-natural materials: silk, cotton, wool, and hemp. These “floor tapestries” are hand-dyed and hand-woven on traditional looms.

Yet these ultra-traditional rugs display an infinite variety of artistic designs that are created with the aid of the latest computer graphics programs. And, the design sensibilities of Indich Collection rugs reflect the blend of contemporary/global and traditional/local aesthetics that characterize today’s sophisticated Island tastes and multicultural trends.

The result is often a breathtaking work of art that owners can walk on – take pride in – and fall in love with.

Barbara DeFranco is the manager of Indich’s Kona Showroom on the Big Island. She’s also a passionate designer who segued into the field from her successful career as a highly artistic Hawaiian landscape architect. “Many of our rug designs and styles are inspired by the flora and fauna of the Islands, so it felt like natural weaving to be here doing this,” she says.indich collection

“I moved to Hawai‘i 40 years ago,” recalls DeFranco. “Upon arriving on these beautiful Islands, I became involved in landscape gardening. Through a wholesale nursery that I started in rural Kona, I was able to implement my design abilities by creating beautiful gardens. I then opened a retail plant store in town. I developed a nine-acre botanical garden that currently serves our community.”

As it happened, Bill Indich served on that garden’s board of directors; five years ago he asked DeFranco to open his Kona Showroom. “Stepping into the rug industry was second nature for me,” she says today. “I had already been a rug collector for some time.”

DeFranco and her design staff work with – and co-create with – the Aloha State’s top designers (many of whom have been profiled previously in HS). “We learn constantly from these designers; they are amazing to work with,” she says. Their collaborative results grace some of Hawaii’s finest luxury homes and upscale resort hotels. DeFranco proudly reveals that Indich Collection rugs “played an integral part in 10 out of 13 major winners” of the most recent ASID Hawaii Chapter’s Excellence Awards.

“So much of the lifestyle here is inside-outside…no walls, open air, lanais, lots of water features…spacious living spaces with magnificent ocean views,” says DeFranco. “Being on a job site with palm trees blowing in the wind and sun shining down, I feel blessed to bring the fine designs of Indich into the homes of Hawaii.”
