HS Spa Style
By Douglas King | Published  05/17/2006 | Luxury Resorts | Unrated
by Sophia V. Schweitzer and Douglas King

Over a decade ago, the first resort spas in the Islands were quick to call themselves “European style,” as if embarrassed by their Hawaiian roots. Spas in Hawai`i have come into their own since then, and, with astounding speed, have learned to be proud of the Hawaiian element. Today, the emphasis is on native healing traditions, local botanicals, the calming beauty of the ocean, ingredients and techniques from Asia brought here in plantation times, and, above all, the capable, loving touch of Aloha, which comes from the land itself.

"In this special Spa issue of Hawaiian Style, we bring you a resource of Spa facilities on all the islands. We’re also pleased to present a collection of Hawaiian spa products that can be enjoyed at home, either in the Islands or abroad. While our list does not cover every spa or healing facility—such a rundown would fill an entire issue—we have selected the most popular, and those offering a truly Hawaiian feeling, as well as facilities that stand out for their beautiful design, signature treatments, or special Island charm."

O‘ahu

Mandara Spa
The Mandara Spa at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa hints at its Asian origins with offerings such as traditional copper foot baths. Yet it also honors Hawaiian influences with a smart nine-page menu that emphasizes local ingredients and ethnic healing techniques. The 150-minute Pacific Retreat includes a grounding coffee or coconut body scrub and a multicultural massage. Couples in love bid their therapists farewell after 50-minute massages to apply a chocolate-macadamia nut scrub in privacy, in the oh-so romantic signature Exploration in Chocolate treat.

Serenity Spa Hawai‘i
“Local treatments and traditional Day Spa amenities,” promises Serenity Spa Hawai‘i at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach. Treatments span the spectrum from a thorough, circulation-stimulating, hot lava rock massage to a classic facial-based on Chinese wisdom. In a simple-is-better philosophy, the wrap therapies stand out. In the Ti leaf and Ko`olau Mist wrap, cooling ti leaves relieve sunburn, while aloe vera and kukui nut oils restore salt-and-sun weary skin.

SpaHalekulani
Island traditions reflect their South Pacific heritage in the seven tranquil suites of SpaHalekulani at the impeccable Halekulani On the Beach. Signature options include a Samoan massage strengthened by stones smoothed with a warm noni oil; a Japanese treatment that applies the invigorating rhythm of ton ton pounders; and a mind-and-body cleansing version of an ancient Tongan steam therapy, with lemongrass and eucalyptus oils, in a tent of kapa cloth. Pure Hawaiian is the scent of maile that infuses this spa’s product line with its earthy forest tones and its memory of a vine that is associated with nobility.

Abhasa Waikïkï Spa
Located in The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Abhasa Waikïkï Spa offers treatments in a tropical garden, among monkeypod and plumeria trees—the only spa to do so along the Kaläkaua Avenue strip. Although Abhasa uses the exclusive Natura Bissë line of skin care products in several of its indoor treatments, its three courtyard cabanas are what you want for a true “natura” experience. Large enough for couples, they are ideal for Hawai‘i’s own rhythmic and loving lomi lomi massage.

Nä Ho`öla Spa
With a theme of native Hawaiian healing plants repeated in architecture, design and art, Nä Ho`öla Spa in the Hyatt Regency Waikïkï Resort & Spa endeavors to perpetuate Hawaiian values in a light-filled 10,000-square-feet spread. Known for its lomi lomi massage given by therapists who were taught the wisdom of their elders, the spa also offers a signature polish with macadamia nut oil, noni, aloe, pineapple and papaya, and a Polynesian scrub with kukui nut oil and Hawaiian salt.

Hawaiian Rainforest Salon and Spa
A modest day spa with full services, Hawaiian Rainforest Salon and Spa at the Pacific Beach Hotel draws attention to Hawai`i’s plantation heritage with its Asian elements. Green tea comes back in an exfoliation, a facial, and a mask. In a variant of a yogic Thai massage, which stretches the muscles, a warm herbal mixture is applied—ginger, kaffir lime, and galangal.

Spa Olakino *Salon
Murmuring water and impressions of lava lend tropical tranquility to Spa Olakino *Salon at the Waikïkï Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, the fifth creation by master hair stylist Paul Brown. Fresh botanicals find their way into customized plant- and fruit- based therapies that may just start with a taste of pineapple, to ensure that even the palate will relax. The all-day Olakino Experience uses Hawaiian sea salt in a foot bath, wild ginger in a massage, papaya and pineapple in a polish, and Hawaiian-grown spirulina in a wrap.

Spa Suites at The Kähala
Plantation-style shutters and Hawaiian quilts enrich the classy Spa Suites at The Kähala, just east of Diamond Head, where individual attention comes first. The five 550-square-feet private suites include infinity-edge jet tubs; all sessions start with a foot-cleansing ritual with `alaea salts. The two 150-minute signature treatments begin with a cooling spearmint and aloe polish, and end with a volcanic mud scalp massage: In Piha kino, a sports-style massage is enhanced by heated basalt stones placed on strategic points. Lökahi emphasizes the calming qualities of lomi lomi and native herbal ingredients.

Spa Luana
On the North Shore of O`ahu, famed for its big waves, Spa Luana at the Turtle Bay Resort provides the ultimate Hawaiian getaway with a no-nonsense seaside massage, on a wooden deck located just a few feet from the shore. Indoors, we are partial to the pineapple pedicure, in which our feet come to rest with a warmed coconut milk foot bath and a sea salt-and-lava exfoliation, followed by a crushed pineapple and honey mask and a kukui nut oil massage.

`Ihilani Spa
O`ahu’s first destination spa, the `Ihilani Spa at the JW Marriott `Ihilani Resort and Spa in opulent Kö`olina, takes the healing powers of the nearby ocean seriously—by bringing Hawai`i’s mineral-rich waters inside. Its thalasso therapy tub equipped with underwater jets ensures an invigorating yet relaxing bath; additional essential oils are optional. `Ihilani offers full-day programs that include the signature treatment Pua Kai—Flower of the Sea—a soak-polish-massage-manicure-and-pedicure named after the spa’s exotic line of products infused with ginger, orange blossoms, jasmine, rose, and coconut.

Maui

Waihua—A Place of Wellness
When cultural consultant Clifford Naeole is brought in to give to a spa a Hawaiian connection, you have to pay attention. At Waihua—A Place of Wellness in the Ritz-Carlton at Kapalua in West Maui, the 80-minute Advanced lomi lomi massage relies on problem-specific lomi lomi techniques. Hawaiian wisdom holds that the well-being of body, mind, and spirit are intimately entwined. Building on this insight, the signature 50-minute Hawaiian Healing Experience offers seven different aromatherapy blends that are made with the essences of flowers gathered locally. These blends are used to address seven life issues including harmony, protection, and self-esteem.

The Spa at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa
At the foot of the West Maui mountains, The Spa at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa on Kä`anapali Beach is smart to dedicate one dollar per treatment to the protection of the native forested watershed. Treatments incorporate local ecological elements, perhaps most sweetly in an 80-minute Island Lavender body butter treatment that starts with a Maui-sugar scrub with Maui lavender and passion fruit and ends with a soothing, warm coconut and mango wrap.

Spa Moana
Sly treatment options do not interfere with the healing power of the waves in Spa Moana at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Kä`anapali, where lazy ocean views in the relaxation lounge bring the essence of Hawai`i to the spa experience; the spa’s aromatherapy massage infuses well-established techniques with locally grown plants, among them lavender and lemongrass, while salt-based glows turn to ginger, coffee and mango nut—proud products of the land.

The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Maui
A zen-inspired oasis, The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Maui redefines effective and pure pampering with three lavish oceanfront cabanas surrounded by native naupaka plants, and, naturally, the soothing sound of waves. They are the ideal setting for the two-hour Hawaiian Ceremonial lomi lomi, with two therapists working in harmony through meditation, music, and breath. Hawaiian flavors return in E Ola Hou, a 110-minute indulgence that includes a pineapple and papaya polish, a wrap with noni oil and ti, a coconut and kukui nut oils hair hydration, and a full-body pineapple and papaya lotion massage.

The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Maui
At the newly renovated and expanded The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Maui at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, it makes sense to couple the Balinese ambiance that worldwide Mandaras are known for with strong Hawaiian elements. The spa’s recipes for relaxation include a delicious local-ingredient vanilla and jasmine facial, and an awakening island coffee scrub; perhaps best is the honest Hawaiian Pöhaku, which eases the most troubled muscles and joints with heated cocoa-buttered lava stones. 808-891-8774

Spa Grande
Central to the 50,000 square-feet Spa Grande at the Grand Wailea Resort—The Waldorf-Astoria Collection is the Termé Wailea Hydrotherapy. Here you can bathe in papaya enzymes, soothe your aches in a Japanese furo, or experience a waterfall massage. All in all, more than 100 treatments are available, many deftly enhanced with interwoven Hawaiian techniques and ingredients. The Haleakalä Dream Bath awakens the senses with sandalwood and lemon grass; detoxification has never been easier than with green papaya, honey, and tropical oils applied in a ginger and Hawaiian salt scrub and wrap.

Spa Kea Lani
On the east end of the Wailea resort area, the unpretentious Spa Kea Lani at The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui sports a sophisticated menu that masters the use of locally-grown and often organic ingredients. Gotu kola, noni, and `awa empower a massage oil scented with pineapple and lemongrass. In the 80-minute Ala Lani Body Experience, which includes a lomi lomi massage, you’ll find Hawaiian sugar cane in a polish, and either stimulating ginger and lime or calming lavender and vanilla in the final mist.

Honua Spa
Set in a verdant garden with a large outdoor jet tub and views of the sea, the small Honua Spa at Hotel Häna-Maui on Häna Ranch in East Maui is easy to love. Its time-honored treatments celebrate the natural resources of pristine, wild East Maui with the signature oil honua—the word means earth. This oil complements a variety of spa options with buttery vanilla orchid, sandalwood, coconut and ginger scents, and blossoms in the spa’s facial and hot-stone massage.

Spa at The Lodge & Beach Village at Moloka‘i Ranch
On Moloka‘i, the most Hawaiian of the Hawaiian islands, local therapists at the isolated Spa at The Lodge & Beach Village at Moloka‘i Ranch cannot help but draw from the `äina itself, the land from which, in Hawaiian traditions, all healing flows. The six-year-old paniolo-style hotel—rustic and luxurious at once—offers individualized therapies in a one-room spa.

The Spa
On the small island of Läna‘i, rejuvenating is about all one can do, and The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Läna`i at Mänele Bay simply magnifies this truth. In its serene plantation-style facility close to ocean and pool, it applies Hawaiian fruits—banana and coconut—to modern services in the scrumptious Ali`i Scrub; signature is its detoxifying warm limu (seaweed) body mask.

Spa Without Walls
Nestled in terraced waterfall gardens, the 10 oh-so-peaceful lauhala-sided cabanas of Spa Without Walls at the Fairmont Orchid accommodate more than plain outdoor massages. Almost all items on the spa menu can be adapted to Hawai`i’s healing climate. Still, only inside you’ll find the signature Big Island Vanilla Coffee Exfoliation, a scrumptious polish with vanilla, island coffee, and raw Hawaiian sugar infused with orange oils. This delightful treatment ends with a vanilla lotion massage. Two new outdoor treatments include the exclusive Honey Coconut Sugar Scrub and the Herbal Hawaiian Treatment.

Mauna Lani Spa
Culture and nature come together in the isolated native healing garden of the Mauna Lani Spa at the Mauna Lani Resort, where nine thatched cabanas are equipped with outdoor showers, and ancient lava flows seem to absorb all sound. Treatments incorporate Hawaiian healing wisdom, such as in the loving `öpü huli, a belly lomi lomi with kukui nut oil that is ideal for menstrual cramps. The Spa’s Aquatic Body Therapy salt-water pool, built inside a lava tube, provides womb-like warmth and underwater acoustics through photovoltaic panels placed in the canopy.

Kohala Sports Club & Spa
The State’s first destination spa, Kohala Sports Club & Spa at the Hilton Waikoloa Village opened its grand 25,000 square-foot facility in 1988. It remains an island favorite. We are quite passionate about a certain Orchid Body Silk Oil that returns in the Orchid Isle Massage and Orchid Isle Wrap. Saturated with orchids, jasmine, neroli and citrus, this wrap is said to slow the aging process, but it is its sensual velvetiness, applied in an oceanside hale, that really counts.

Mandara Spa
Scheduled to open sometime this summer, the islands’ newest Mandara Spa at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort may be modest in size. But it will almost certainly have the chain’s expected Balinese-Asian opulence and trusted techniques seamlessly merged with island elements. Its menu features an exotic lime and ginger glow that includes a gentle body brush and comforting warm oil drip.

Spa
Nicknamed “the best no-spa spa,” the Kona Village’s Spa at historic Ka`üpülehu proves that a simple Hawaiian setting under a thatched roof can provide a complex experience. Still, the resort’s barefoot-luxury guest cottages with South Polynesian themes, scattered amid lagoons, are spa retreats unto themselves, without televisions or telephones. Stay home for signature treatments such as the Aloe Aloha Papa ala Kökua wrap, in which aloe, lavender, tea tree oil and seaweed gel condition continentally pale skin for the Hawaiian sun.

Hualälai Sports Club and Spa
Polynesian influences and island-inspired treatments merge in the tropical ambiance of Hualälai Sports Club and Spa, where the thatched-roof bamboo-screened hale are perfect for a couple’s massage and the outdoor spa courtyard with its spa tubs beckons one to relax. Signature treatments are the 50-minute scrubs made with local ingredients such as island-bee honey and raw Hawaiian sugar, or macadamia nuts and coffee. In the niu scrub, coconut combines with organic pineapple for a polish, and returns in a milk and moisturizing cream.

Ho‘öla Spa
When a spa sits perched on the edge of oceanfront cliffs, it must take advantage of sea and salt. Ho‘öla Spa at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa, the newest spa in Hawai‘i, is just 3,200 feet in size—marble and koa. This is because massages are most relaxing on its two outdoor lanai, which seem as if suspended over the ocean, right above stark lava rocks caressed by the waves. Naturally, this is the perfect setting to try a sea salt glow with Hawaiian sea salt, `awa and passion fruit.

Kaua‘i

Anara Spa
In sunny Po`ipü on the south side of Kaua`i, Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt Kaua`i Resort & Spa prides itself on its open-air architecture that includes outdoor lava rock showers and, for each treatment room, a private, bamboo-fringed tropical lanai. Popular is its Honey Ginger Body Masque, formulated by the islands’ beloved local company Warren Botanicals: A creamy blend of shea butter with aloe, kukui nut oil, honey, green tea, ginger and lemongrass follows a scrub of raw sugar, fresh-ground ginger root with orange peel, and, deliciously, red rose.

Princeville Health Club & Spa
Fitness combines with pampering on the most northern edge of the islands, where the Princeville Health Club & Spa within the 9,000-acre Princeville Resort combines exercise and lap pool facilities with a result-oriented spa. The menu offers proven techniques, including, of course, Hawai`i’s true lomi lomi; it relies on the quality of Aveda, a natural skin care line. But we favor an oceanside massage close to Kauai’s famed shore and magnificent waves.
