Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Amy Hänaiali‘i offers a fine collection of 13 songs in her latest album, “Generation Hawai‘i.” Comprised of mostly traditional Hawaiian songs, the album does also include a special Tahitian track and a wonderful jazz track that gives a nod to Hilo town.
Hänaiali‘i wrote the majority of the tracks on the album and with the exception of the aforementioned “In Hilo Town” (and a bonus track written by Michael Ruff), all of the songs are sung in the Hawaiian language. Hänaiali‘i’s voice is pure and sweet, like fragrant plumeria, and has helped in the resurgence of the ha`i (falsetto) in Hawaiian music.
From the first track the stage is set for an easy listening experience. “Generation Hawai‘i” is the type of album you want to be listening to when the trade winds blow in a soft afternoon rain. Track five, “No Nä Hulu Küpuna,” is especially poignant and lovely. While Hänaiali‘i sings and a choir backs her, the lyrics to this special chant are translated in English. The song is beautiful on many levels.
The one track that picks things up just a bit is “Ho‘oheno A‘o Pi‘ilani,” a beautiful rendition of a classic song that is included in honor of Aunty Anges Wood.
Each mele (song) has special spiritual and cultural significance and the entire album is an enduring tribute to her tutu (grandmother) who inspired Hänaiali‘I to pursue Hawaiian music. Thank you tutu. It is easy to hear why Hänaiali‘i is one of Hawai‘i’s favorites.
