Have Lens, Will Travel… O’ahu-Based Photographer Captures The Timeless Beauty Of the Aloha State

As a native of O`ahu, John De Mello knows the precise locations and time of day to capture the perfect photographs of Hawai’i. The resulting images have graced the pages of publications such as Bon Appetite, Bride’s, Travel & Leisure and now Hawaiian Style.

Based in Honolulu, De Mello travels extensively throughout Polynesia, the Pacific Rim, and Asia. On these jaunts he enjoys working with a prestigious international and corporate clientele including Nike, Sprint, the Singapore Tourist Board, Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, and Sheraton hotels. He also uses his trips to add to his beautiful collection of stock photography.

Trained at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, John has been photographing lovely tropical scenes for 20 years. For personal work, DeMello’s equipment of choice is the KB Canham DLC 4X5 film camera with various Nikkor, Schneider, Rodenstock and Goertz lenses. For commercial work he uses a Canon 1Ds Mk II Digital Camera. His favorite lenses include the 16-35 2.8L and 70-200 2.8L IS.

“I love macro work to create works that the viewer can fall into or shooting landscapes that give the viewer a feeling of peace or serenity,” says DeMello. “I also love the look of time-exposure oceanscapes at sunrise or sunset.”

As the images on these pages attest, De Mello has an eye for capturing the incredible landscapes and scenes that make up the Hawaiian Islands.
