For a truly uplifting and spiritual experience, 7 Simple Pieces (7SP), offers their sophomore release, Got Aloha. With an interesting blend and mixture of Gospel, R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae, and Rock, this album brings the listener an Island flavored Christian experience.

Most of the arrangements were completed by 7SP and they easily combine the Hawaiian language with English on many tracks. Two songs—the opening track It’s You and Agrees were written by lead singer Stacy “Leiana” Kepa, and interestingly these are two of the best tracks on the album. Kepa’s voice is strong and clean and she has a distinct sound, which is easy and enjoyable.

For the most part the album is slow to mid-tempo, creating an atmosphere of worship and quiet meditation. The only track that did not seem to fit is Komo Mai, a song that sounded more like a dance-club mix.

Hawaii Aloha is a fun track with a nice hook and rhythm, sung in Hawaiian that is a favorite, as is Gates of Righteousness, with is strong Jamaican influence, changing tempo numerous times resulting in some lively moments.

As the band says in their linear notes, they have taken hymns that have been around and given them a “generation kick up.” This works for the most part. Hopefully future recordings will include more original content.
