» 2100 Kalakaua Avenue
By Brian Berusch | Published 01/16/2007 | HSShops | Unrated
Waikïkï is arguably the metropolitan hub of the entire Hawaiian Island chain, but the fact remains that people arrive in Honolulu seeking not cosmopolitan sophistication but natural splendor. Island visitors crave the beach vibe, the laid-back lifestyle, the back-to-nature feeling, and the multi-cultural flavors of the Islands in their accommodations, their fashions, their recreation, and their dining experiences.

If 100 architects were asked what their dream job might be—and told to think about it long and hard—many would probably admit that creating an entire community from the ground up would be the ultimate creative project.
» Nobu

The undisputed, worldwide “godfather of modern sushi,” Japan-born Nobu Matsuhisa, has arrived in Hawai‘i with a gorgeous, brand new restaurant. Anyone who visits his O‘ahu venue is likely to conclude that, yes, Nobu will make you a meal you can’t refuse.

The Hobbit HouseIt was on the day that a bearded old-timer pulled up to the gate in front of Captain Howie’s Waimanalo, O‘ahu, home in a beat-up pickup truck and said “So where you gonna mount the cannon?” that its owner decided he was on the right track.
» Makana

Hawai‘i as a whole doesn’t always take kindly to change. When centuries-old tradition collides with modern-day innovation—namely a thriving international art scene—some folk turn their backs on the future.
» The Harmony of Kaiwa
By Brian Berusch | Published 12/27/2007 | Flavor | Unrated
KaiwaIsamu Kubota took one look at the location of a small and awkward space on the mezzanine level of Waikïkï's Beach Walk promenade, and knew it was perfect. Here, on a revitalized Lewers Street, he would stage the ideal complement to his debut Honolulu restaurant, Kai, which opened nearly three years ago. It would be the yin to his yang. Where Kai was large and hip, fusing both cuisine and aesthetics with Japanese and Hawaiian styling, this new locale—dubbed Kaiwa—would be strictly Japanese.
» Kapalua Resort

Kapalua ResortBefore Debra Schonewill joined the Kapalua Resort in 2006 as its interior design director, she spent a significant amount of time appreciating Maui from the water. When not running her own firm (Schonewill International Inc.), she would sail up and down the waterway that churned between Maui, Läna‘i and Moloka‘i.
» Erik Zuziak

Erik ZuziakUnpretentious simplicity meets cutting-edge sophistication in the beach residence that Erik Zuziak, AIA, built for his family on O‘ahu’s North Shore. Traditional design and ultra-contemporary, eco-friendly materials, as well as a sensitive blend of design and site, add up to true Hawaiian style according to the award-winning architect.
» Keali‘i Reichel
By Brian Berusch | Published 04/1/2008 | Island Rhythms | Unrated
Keali‘i ReichelThe label “musical artist and kumu hula”—while impressive—doesn’t do much justice in defining Keali‘i Reichel. A student, scholar, teacher, performer, master chanter, recording artist and cultural advisor, Reichel could very well wear all the listed hats during a single week. Yet for him, achieving such versatility isn’t about filling a role or a series of roles for their own sakes. Reichel “has to do it,” in his own words, for himself and his students. And you don’t have to be under his tutelage to comprehend his power, or mana, during one of his performances.
» Shades Of Green

Shades of GreenThe first question posed to 1st Look Exteriors CEO Greg Lee—“How’s business, being so far from Honolulu?”—was met with a smirk.
“They just broke ground on 20,000 new homes on the ridge line across the street, less than three miles from here,” Lee says confidently. “Still think we’re isolated?”
