» Bountiful Bamboo
By Sophia V. Schweitzer | Published 04/1/2008 | Luxury Homes
Bountiful BambooOn the verdant slopes of Hölualoa, just above Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai‘i, amid sprawling monkey pod trees and fragrant coffee orchards, fashion designer Virginia Small’s soon-to-be-finished home quietly heralds a change in western building methods. With its sea-grass ceiling and ample 912—square foot covered länai, the breezy 2,064-square-foot structure mirrors Hawai‘i’s pragmatic sugar plantation style, and so could hardly be more apt. But Small’s abode also bears witness to a growing demand for environmentally-friendly construction materials. From structural poles to grand staircase, panels, and walls, it is built almost entirely with one of the world’s most sustainable resources, bamboo.
» Fairmont Kea Lani
By Mark E. Ward | Published 12/27/2007 | Luxury Homes
fairmont kea laniThe Hawaiian word for beautiful is "nani"; the Spanish word for beautiful is "bello" – and both apply to Maui's Kea Lani Fairmont. The resort legitimately reflects the Islands' little-known Spanish ties while staying true to Hawaiian roots. A bold white edifice, sun-washed façade, and plentiful arches suggest a Spanish style ...

outside view"It was all about the location," says Oakland, California's Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson of the prime Kihei beach site on which he and his wife, Joy, chose to build a Maui getaway nearly a dozen years ago. "Our priorities were being right on the water with a nice sand beach, and being able to walk to restaurants and stores. This had all the criteria we were looking for."
» Aloha, Manhattan
By Sharon Harris | Published 12/27/2007 | Luxury Homes
interiorManhattan and Honolulu may be eight thousand miles apart, but former New Yorker Michael Hoovis wanted to bridge the distance between them in his new Imperial Plaza penthouse condominium. Now a Hawai'i resident, Hoovis transported many Big Apple design and style elements across the Pacific Ocean to the residence, located in Honolulu's Kakaako neighborhood. The two-story penthouse replicates an urban high-rise apartment—but with distinct touches of Hawaiiana.
» Big View On The Big Island
By Drew Limsky | Published 10/3/2007 | Luxury Homes
Home With a ViewTrans-Pacific Design principal Sue J. Moss has created the interiors of such well-trafficked public spaces as the acclaimed Spa at Mauna Lani and more than a few cruise ships. But when this Big Island local set out to furnish a less-than-gargantuan vacation home on that same isle, built by architect Clem Lam for a Pennsylvania couple, Moss knew that a different sensibility would be required.
» Dream Team

Baldwin HomeFor Dennis Baldwin, owner and sole proprietor of Dennis Baldwin Construction in Kailua-Kona, constructing his Keauhou dream home was an extremely personal affair. “It's a critical element to do your own work,” he says. “It adds value personally and gives you a lot of creative latitude.”

The Hobbit HouseIt was on the day that a bearded old-timer pulled up to the gate in front of Captain Howie’s Waimanalo, O‘ahu, home in a beat-up pickup truck and said “So where you gonna mount the cannon?” that its owner decided he was on the right track.

By Linda Hayes | Published 10/3/2007 | Luxury Homes
“It's like living at the top of the world,” says Karl Gottling of the stunning, 38th-floor Landmark Waikiki penthouse for which he designed the interiors. “There's a feeling of freedom being up so high and with the panoramic views over the hotels on Waikïkï and the Honolulu skyline, and up to Diamond Head.”
» Culture Connection

A home could scarcely have a more classically Hawaiian setting than to be perched on a hillside at The Pointe of Hawaii Loa Ridge. After all, the site overlooks the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific, with views opening onto Diamond Head and Koko Head in the distance.
» That Good Old (Brand New) Neighborhood Feeling
By Marcus Webb | Published 08/29/2007 | Luxury Homes
A popular 19th century New England proverb claimed “Good fences make good neighbors.” Even more famously, poet Robert Frost disagreed with that sentiment in one of his most honored poems, “Mending Wall.” Frost gently implied that neighborliness -- open hearts – may be best encouraged by open spaces.

When the couple toured the luxury condominium development, they were enchanted by the grand ocean vistas from the second-floor residence. But just below, the first-floor unit looked out to a private plunge pool, lush tropical landscaping, and waves lapping onto the sand.

You can always spot an architect’s home. That is, you can always spot the home of an inspired residential architect. The harmony is unmistakable. Every façade, every fixture, every finish blends seamlessly yet subtly into a perfect package, like a box gift-wrapped by Martha Stewart (or some other convicted felon with good craft skills).
» Street of Dreams

If 100 architects were asked what their dream job might be—and told to think about it long and hard—many would probably admit that creating an entire community from the ground up would be the ultimate creative project.

An architect builds his dream home on The Big Island.

“Architecture is a lifetime experience,” says Roger Brasel of the captivating home he designed for himself and his wife, Nancy, on a verdant hillside overlooking Keauhou Bay on The Big Island of Hawai‘i. “This is the fifth house we've designed and built for ourselves in the last 15 years. It reflects who we are now and enhances our lifestyle today.”
» Tara Plantation
By Douglas King | Published 02/1/2007 | Luxury Homes

The mystical magic of old Hawai‘i is found at Tara Plantation in Papa‘a Bay on the Northeastern coast of Kaua‘i, and even the most sophisticated camera cannot capture its aura. You must see it to believe and appreciate the sheer beauty, elegant simplicity and expansiveness of this plantation-style ranch, once described by an awe-struck visitor as a place that felt like “sumptuous melting chocolate” to be tasted and slowly savored.
» Showcase On Oahu

“When people walk into a house,” says architect Jeffrey Long, “I want their instant response to be one of comfort, ease, and happy awareness of the space around them.” Long and his team at Long & Associates Inc. (LAI) achieved that goal with an award-winning residence they created on Waiholo Street in East Honolulu. At 4,600 square feet this one-story, four-bedroom, oceanfront home is a true concept showcase; yet it’s anything but show-offy.

Studios By the Sea“The world is my palette,” declares Hawai’i-raised artist Christian Riese Lassen.  The connection between life and art is indeed a global nexus for this extraordinarily successful Hawaiian painter, surfer, and environmentalist.  Lassen owns several homes around the world, including on the U.S. mainland, overseas, and, naturally, on Hawai’i itself (two homes on Maui, one on Oahu).  His Island homes, in particular, are intimate yet grand-scale expressions of his vision…touchstones of a globe-trotting lifestyle that centers on art, sun, surf, and sea.

When the husband-and-wife architecture team of Peter and Blanka Geesey accepted the task of designing, building, and outfitting a spec home in Kuki`o, a young resort community on the Big Island’s western Kohala coast, the job presented a delicate task: to bring a harmonious new level of luxury to one of Hawai’i’s most serene and storied areas.

Glass, Steel - And a Million Dollar View

Sometime between 200 A.D. and 600 A.D., Polynesian explorers sculled their outrigger canoes into what is now called Anaeho’omalu Bay, on the west coast of Hawai’i’s Big Island, and were soon transfixed. The water temperature was mild; sea breezes cooled the air; and just a couple of gourds of rain (about 10 inches) fell annually.

"A different way of looking at living" is what sets Hawaiian homes apart from those anywhere in the rest of the world," declares Earl Kono, principal of Riecke Sunnland Kono Architects, Ltd. What, exactly, defines that difference in Hawaiian vision? "Here on the Islands, you’re more connected with the environment," Kono explained. Even when you’re inside, if it’s a truly Hawaiian style structure, "It’s almost like living outside."
