Dangler Design “I’ve always had a strong passion for architecture,” says Breck Dangler, who grew up in the Islands and traveled the world before launching his own successful building firm on Maui in the late 1970s. Over the next several years, he installed hundreds of kitchens. When the time came to add design services to his portfolio, he found it a natural progression. “That practical knowledge of all aspects of construction comes into play when design has to integrate into the actual project,” Dangler says. Dangler – not his staff of specialists – personally handles all the creative work for each project, as well as ordering of materials and scheduling of construction. It’s a conscious choice that leaves him in total control of each project. He usually begins by meeting clients in their home, “to get a feel for the space,” he says. “That helps jumpstart my creative energy.” Next, he brings the client to his downtown office, where they can view full-color, 3D computer renderings of the proposed design, sometimes including a virtual walk-through tour. “Today’s graphics are almost photo-realistic,” Dangler says. “That means this crucial phase is a giant leap beyond the old days of asking clients to visualize the final result just from squinting at a blueprint, which is pretty hard for most people to do.” Dangler also makes extensive use of the Internet and a worldwide network of associates, including contacts made and maintained during his ongoing world travels. These resources prove invaluable when researching the perfect cabinets, fixtures, flooring, or other elements for any given project. “Just today I spoke with a Canadian firm that stocks a certain Dutch brand of cabinetry that we want to use for a current project,” Dangler reveals. “It’s amazing how global this business has become.” Many of those who live and work in Hawai‘i’s high-end homes and offices are highly style-conscious, so the local market reflects definite trends from year to year, Dangler reports. Current trends emphasize earth tones, darker cabinets, flat screen TVs in kitchens, and laptop computer niches with a place to charge a cell phone. Dangler, a Certified Kitchen Designer, accommodates all of these needs with ease in a wide range of styles. Yet he also notes, “A good design is independent of style. Whether it’s an ultra-modern or a traditional, the key is a well thought out, detailed plan that fits into the rest of the house.” The company’s delighted clientele – some now second-generation – offers eloquent testimony to the fact that Dangler Design provides the beauty, comfort, and functionality that Hawaii’s luxury homes demand.
