Much effort, commitment and love is put into farming the land. Michael Conway, an agronomist and operation manager for diversified crops with Dole Food Company, took me on a behind-the-scenes tour of Waialua Estate Chocolate, which produces single-origin dark chocolate so exquisite and rare, top chefs are clamoring to get their hands on it. |

Isamu Kubota took one look at the location of a small and awkward space on the mezzanine level of Waikïkï's Beach Walk promenade, and knew it was perfect. Here, on a revitalized Lewers Street, he would stage the ideal complement to his debut Honolulu restaurant, Kai, which opened nearly three years ago. It would be the yin to his yang. Where Kai was large and hip, fusing both cuisine and aesthetics with Japanese and Hawaiian styling, this new locale—dubbed Kaiwa—would be strictly Japanese. |

The big problem with Hula Grill is deciding when to go. Waikïkï Beach offers few destinations as relaxing and as beautifully located as the plantation-style, oceanfront “grill,” and each meal has something spectacular -- the kind of thing that makes dining decisions, whether you’re on vacation or not, tough.

When you walk into a restaurant of that name in the Four Seasons Resort on the Big Island, your eye is immediately drawn to a huge, stunning, salt-water tropical aquarium. Many visitors naturally assume that this is the venue's major architectural showpiece. But at Pahu i'a, the aquarium is only the prelude to the visual "main course"--the beauty of the Big Island itself.

The photograph above shows a free diver just out of the ocean. In his left hand he carries his catch, an assortment of tropical reef fish. In his right hand, his spear. The setting sun forms a glorious background and the diver, still wet from the ocean (and surely hired by some agency for the day), smiles into the camera for the perfect PR shot.
