Silhouetted Frisbee players along the beach. Hidden waterfalls. Private beaches in river valleys. These are just some of the times and places that are captured by photographer Corey Yeaton as he patrols the Islands of Hawai'i.
Growing up in Holualoa on the Big Island of Hawai'i was inspiration enough to cause Yeaton to pursue photography as a full time career. After completing a degree in environmental science at the University of Davis, California, he returned to Hawai'i to initiate his practice of the photographic arts in the very environment that sparked his inspiration.
"I have always been captivated by nature's unique and pristine beauty," notes Yeaton. "The Big Island's diversity spawned my photographic eye and initiated my study of light in nature." But it was his education at Davis that gave Yeaton the opportunity to explore and better understand his surroundings. Subsequently, inspiration gained from Hawai'i's landscapes, coupled with skills acquired from the university's professors, has enabled him to hone his original visions of beautiful scenery into breathtaking art.
Yeaton uses a variety of cameras (digital and 35mm film) to capture his images. "My camera format facilitates my shooting style," he explains. "I take photos anywhere from waist-deep in the water to hanging from the side of a cliff. Art for me is a combination of subtlety of light and non-traditional composure. Anyone who says photography is easy hasn't followed me on a photo shoot! I hope to be an ambassador for our pristine ecology and to raise awareness about the environment we live in and how best to preserve and work with it."
