Jake Shimabukuro‘s latest album, Gently Weeps, demonstrates why he remains one of Hawai‘i’s premier ukulele players, avidly sought for concerts from the U.S. Mainland to Japan. (Shimabukuro was profiled in HS Vol. 4, No. 2.) 
Let’s just come right out and say it: Hawaiian music enthusiasts will love Nä Palapalai’s third album. Filled with Hawaiian standards and original compositions, the disc offers classic Hawaiian falsetto style, recorded to perfection. Harmonies are both sweet and stunning. 
Cody Pueo Paca waited five years before releasing the follow-up CD to his popular E Ho‘i Nä Wai. The wait was well worth it. 
This album exemplifies what most people would consider classic Hawaiian music. Performed by a trio of charming ladies from Maui, the album is filled with soft ballads and catchy tunes that will make you wish you were back on the Islands, or it could simply add the perfect soundtrack to your Hawaiian day.
From the first track of the latest compilation album, Legends of Hawaii Slack Key Guitar, recorded live at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, a Ledward Kaapana instrumental titled `Ophihi Moemoe, the proper tone is set and the listener knows they are in for a real treat of some of the finest slack key guitar music from Hawaii’s top musicians.
For a truly uplifting and spiritual experience, 7 Simple Pieces (7SP), offers their sophomore release, Got Aloha. With an interesting blend and mixture of Gospel, R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae, and Rock, this album brings the listener an Island flavored Christian experience.
The latest release from Henry Kapono, “The Wild Hawaiian,” carries an appropriate title for this blend of rock and traditional Hawaiian songs. While all of the songs are sung in the Hawaiian language, the music is a compelling and eclectic assortment of rock guitar hooks and riffs, percussion, and a Hammond B-3. This combination works beautifully, creatingan intriguing juxtaposition for listeners.
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Amy Hänaiali‘i offers a fine collection of 13 songs in her latest album, “Generation Hawai‘i.” Comprised of mostly traditional Hawaiian songs, the album does also include a special Tahitian track and a wonderful jazz track that gives a nod to Hilo town.
Brother Noland has been recording ‘Jawaiian’ music -- Jamaican rhythms using Hawaiian instruments -- since the ‘80s, long before the term Jawaiian even existed. When this new music style was born, Noland became the proud papa. 
Hapa is one of those bands you wish you knew about years ago. Once you hear them for the first time, you realize there is something inspirational you have been missing but just didn't know it.
