Brother Noland  Mystical FishBrother Noland Mountain Apple Company www.mountainapplecompany.com Brother Noland has been recording ‘Jawaiian’ music -- Jamaican rhythms using Hawaiian instruments -- since the ‘80s, long before the term Jawaiian even existed. When this new music style was born, Noland became the proud papa. With his most recent album Mystical Fish, Brother Noland once again proves why he is considered an innovator and guiding force in the Hawaiian music scene. Mystical Fish is filled with fun, sing-along, “jam-along” songs that on the surface may seem like simple ditties, but upon careful listening to the lyrics, have a deeper meaning and spirituality. In the opening track, Backfire, the first chorus sings And I just want to let you know/ That you gotta educate your soul/ And only love can truly bring us back, while the second chorus changes slightly to offer a spiritual truth: And I just want to let you know/ That the devil gonna take your soul/ And only love can truly bring us back. The album also offers Brother Noland’s Island version of Bob Dylan’s Forever Young and Stevie Wonder’s Master Blaster, as well as rerecordings of a few of Noland’s own songs. Mystical Fish is a great party album and is filled with quick-tempo, entertaining songs. While the lyrics do sometimes have more complex meanings, the album can be listened to for sheer enjoyment. It is obvious from each track that Brother Noland is comfortable with who he is, his band, and the Aloha-infused style of music he was instrumental in creating. |
