Nä Palapalai Mountain Apple Company www.moutainapplecompany.com Let’s just come right out and say it: Hawaiian music enthusiasts will love Nä Palapalai’s third album. Filled with Hawaiian standards and original compositions, the disc offers classic Hawaiian falsetto style, recorded to perfection. Harmonies are both sweet and stunning. The album begins with three short, fast-paced, foot-tapping songs that make you want to fire up the imu and prepare for family festivities. Tracks four and five slow things down a bit and allow the listener to settle in. The guitar on track five, “Kaua‘i i Ka Mälie,” is especially enticing; mid-way through the song, the tempo picks up and carries the listener away. It is not surprising that the guitar work on this album is extraordinary, since the trio is joined by guitarist Shawn Ishimoto. All 16 tracks are sung in Hawaiian. Only the final track, “Promises of God’s Love,” offers an English translation. “Lei ‘Ohu” and “Lovely Tiare Tahiti” are fun, snappy songs that will cause even the flattest foot to started tapping and dancing. Ka Pua Hae Hawai‘i is a quintessential Hawaiian falsetto sound that many associate with traditional Hawaiian music. Nä Palapalai are flawless in their singing and the musicianship on each track is exemplary. For purists of Hawaiian music who love the tradition of the past (with a bit of today’s contemporary sound), this album will be a fine addition to any collection. |
