Cody Pueo Paca Ulaloa Productions www.moutainapplecompany.com Cody Pueo Paca waited five years before releasing the follow-up CD to his popular E Ho‘i Nä Wai. The wait was well worth it. He aloha…includes seven original songs and six standards that will entertain the casual listener as well as Hawaiian music aficionados. Pueo’s classic falsetto is enhanced and backed by great musicians such as Aaron Salä on piano and Jeff Au Hoy on Hawaiian steel guitar, giving the album a traditional yet contemporary feeling. The majority of the songs have a traditional sound to them and each is sung in Hawaiian, until you arrive at “Laga-Haga.” If the title doesn’t begin to tell you that you are in for treat, then the opening spoken dialog between a local man and woman, definetly primes the pump. Once the music kicks in, get ready for a jamming song filled with nonsense lyrics, that is playful and more than a bit silly. Another outstanding selection is the final track, “Laua‘e Ka Mana‘o,” a mele (song) for King Kaläkaua that honors his enthusiasm and virility in lovemaking. As the linear notes say, “Such mele were composed in encourage the honoree to continue their lineage.” While it may not be Barry White, playing this song in the bedroom may produce the same results. Overall this album is beautiful and even. Pueo’s voice holds strong on each track and the song selection is pleasant with a fine mix of the traditional and the contemporary. |
