Colorful Kauai
Written by Linda Hayes
October 01, 2008

Ask Jamie Smith Jackson, interior designer and co-owner of Pacific Home and Pacific Home Studios in Honolulu, about the delightful interiors she designed for a multi-family house on the North Shore of Kauai, and her response is equally delightful. “It reminds me of what you'd find in a happy grandmother's beach house,” she says. “From the start, we wanted the house to not look new, but to be more about generations of things and found objects.”

Arriving at Kalaekilohana at Kau on Hawaii’s Big Island, feels like coming home. That’s because a guest has indeed arrived at the home of Kenny Joyce and Kilohana Domingo, who are waiting to welcome one and all to their Island plantation-style B&B. Their friendly waves always beckon visitors up the long drive. It’s a tradition. Coming and going, guests enjoy the innkeepers welcome from the lanai, the inviting tropical-style porch that wraps around their Norman Rockwell home, glowing sunshine yellow against a startling blue sky. “E komo mai, welcome and come in,” they say.

Beautifully Smooth…and Roughly Perfect
Written by By Jon Letman
October 01, 2008

Hawai‘i is smooth, but it can also be rough. So said author and part-time Hawai’i resident Paul Theroux. The smoothness comes from the laid-back Island lifestyle, flawless tropical weather, and serene Pacific vistas that go on forever. The roughness comes from occasional minor inconveniences like typhoons and volcanoes.

Keeping the “Vintage” in Villa
Written by Kristina Anderson
October 01, 2008

At what magic moment does a 1980s home cease to look dated and begin to acquire the aura of a vintage classic? Certainly in 2008, any sense of nostalgic appreciation for the decade’s pop-culture icons (like big hair and Smurfs) may still be in the eye of the beholder. So it is that rare homeowner who demonstrates the foresight to recognize that original 1980s details should be preserved for the future—starting now. Fortunately, this is the heartfelt philosophy of Peter and Kathy Murphy, owners of one of the coveted Villas at Mauna Kea, located within the Big Island’s venerable Mauna Kea Resort.

When it comes to building homes on the Hawaiian coast, there’s oceanfront

Sutton/Archipelago (Paiko Lagoon home)
Written by Hawaiian Style Magazine
July 18, 2008
On O`ahu’s eastern flank, the Ko`olau Mountains reach out like ancient brown-green earth fingers towards the aquamarine waters of Maunalua Bay. A  small road, Paiko Drive, follows one narrow peninsula that juts into the Paiko Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary.

Modernist Hawaii
Written by Linda Hayes
July 18, 2008
Roger Brasel, AIA, of Hawaii Island Architects LLC, recalls a moment early on in a project he and general contractor Bud Patton had undertaken near Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawai'i. "The lot we were planning to build on was a third-acre in the Keauhou Estates subdivision," Brasel says. "Before we even started drawing up plans, Bud and I drove his pickup truck to the site and stood on the roof to check out the possibility of - and views from - a second story."

Building Bali-Style
Written by Sophia V. Schweitzer
July 18, 2008
Nestled in the verdant foothills of Mount Namahana, on the secluded north shore of Kaua'i, stands a home that lifts the celebration of tropical living to the next level of art. High cathedral ceilings with exposed hardwood rafters and rattan meet small hand-carved wooden lotus flowers that neatly cover construction bolts. The bathtub and sinks are custom-carved. Expansive glass sliding doors open onto an extensive deck. An infinity-edged, salt-water pool cascades over two hand-carved black lava stone carvings-replicas from a temple in Java. A gazebo sits at the pool's edge. A Buddha statue smiles.

Bountiful Bamboo
Written by Sophia V. Schweitzer
April 01, 2008
Bountiful BambooOn the verdant slopes of Hölualoa, just above Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai‘i, amid sprawling monkey pod trees and fragrant coffee orchards, fashion designer Virginia Small’s soon-to-be-finished home quietly heralds a change in western building methods. With its sea-grass ceiling and ample 912—square foot covered länai, the breezy 2,064-square-foot structure mirrors Hawai‘i’s pragmatic sugar plantation style, and so could hardly be more apt. But Small’s abode also bears witness to a growing demand for environmentally-friendly construction materials. From structural poles to grand staircase, panels, and walls, it is built almost entirely with one of the world’s most sustainable resources, bamboo.

Aloha, Manhattan
Written by Sharon Harris
December 27, 2007
interiorManhattan and Honolulu may be eight thousand miles apart, but former New Yorker Michael Hoovis wanted to bridge the distance between them in his new Imperial Plaza penthouse condominium. Now a Hawai'i resident, Hoovis transported many Big Apple design and style elements across the Pacific Ocean to the residence, located in Honolulu's Kakaako neighborhood. The two-story penthouse replicates an urban high-rise apartment—but with distinct touches of Hawaiiana.

Ocean Majesty

outside view"It was all about the location," says Oakland, California's Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson of the prime Kihei beach site on which he and his wife, Joy, chose to build a Maui getaway nearly a dozen years ago. "Our priorities were being right on the water with a nice sand beach, and being able to walk to restaurants and stores. This had all the criteria we were looking for."

Fairmont Kea Lani
Written by Mark E. Ward
December 27, 2007
fairmont kea laniThe Hawaiian word for beautiful is "nani"; the Spanish word for beautiful is "bello" – and both apply to Maui's Kea Lani Fairmont. The resort legitimately reflects the Islands' little-known Spanish ties while staying true to Hawaiian roots. A bold white edifice, sun-washed façade, and plentiful arches suggest a Spanish style ...
